It was a Tuesday morning 17 years ago when The United States of America changed. Our country was attacked, many lives lost, and the effects of that day will continue to be felt in many ways for generations to come. I remember attending the first Big Ten Football game post 9/11. It seemed all of us in the stands were a little nervous, being in a stadium with 70,000 + people and what could have been a target of another attack. When the National Anthem started we all rose, put our hand over our heart and listened to the words. By the end there was probably not a dry eye in the stadium. Then something else happened, people began to hug each other. It wasn’t about our personal beliefs, our political differences or anything else that makes each of us uniquely individual but rather what brings us together as Americans..We were all proud that day, proud of what we were standing for, proud of what our country has meant. Remembering all the lives that were recently lost and all those that had been lost since our founding days. For the next few months flag pins, cars with flags and American Patriotism took the lead in conversations, in politics, and in the media. We were, One Nation Under GOD. As the months past, the attitude of that day and the immediate aftermath began to change. Division started to grow and instead of looking at each other as Fellow Americans with some different ideas and opinions it became an “us against them” attitude. If we can each remember how we felt in the Fall of 2001 maybe we won’t need another tragedy to come together but instead be a stronger nation because of what we have in common instead of focusing on our differences.
Lee Greenwood’s lyrics resonate now as much as they did then..
“And I’m proud to be an American Where at least I know I’m free
And I won’t forget the ones who died who gave that right to me
And I’ll gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today
Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land, God Bless the USA.”
As we near the final push of holiday shoppers and bumper to bumper traffic, it is a good time to remember the power behind a simple smile. No matter what kind of day one might be having or the stresses one is dealing with, a sincere smile, to a friend or stranger, is a great way to brighten one’s day. The receiver of a smile will appreciate it and the giver should feel good in providing a positive moment to another. Try it. Smile and hold a door open for someone. Smile to the person in the drive thru. Smile as you walk by someone in a crowded store or in a waiting room. It is truly amazing how powerful a smile can be. A simple nonverbal gesture is a universal way to express joy, appreciation and kindness. If everyone tries to smile just a bit more every day then maybe kindness becomes the norm and not the exception. Smile And The World Smiles With You !
All one has to do is watch a recent episode of NBC’s “Will & Grace” to see that Hollywood is the epitome of hypocrisy. In a particular story plot we see Grace and Karen making sexual comments to a work place sub-ordinate and joking about how great it would be to be intimate with him before they start talking to their own body parts. We also see Jack and Will make inappropriate sexual comments about another individual as if these comments and behavior is perfectly acceptable. One has to wonder how any actor, musician, director, producer or writer, that participates in any way actions that tries to normalize behavior that society can consider criminal, can cash their paycheck and then act surprised and appalled with all the stories coming out of their peers actually doing these same despicable things. These actions have always been well-known but the “Just the way it is” and “Don’t rock the boat” attitude was the way to keep everyone’s bank account happy. The characters of The Seaver’s (Growing Pains), The Keaton’s (Family Ties), the Winslow’s (Family Matters), The Evan’s (Good Times) to name a few, would never be considered for broadcast today because they talked about values and respect for one another without resorting to joking about sex, alcohol and drugs yet they tackled these topics and how it relates to both adults and children. If the “Self-Proclaimed Elites” in Hollywood truly are upset with what the rest of the world is learning about their “secrets” than they need to stop making this type of product and start doing what is right.
